Mike Bamberger, OSU Emergency Manager, will present a deeper dive into workplace preparedness. Recognizing that Oregon faces multiple hazards that can affect us at home or work, we will discuss common planning elements that we can prepare for to reduce the impact of the hazard on our workforce.

Although it can be said that employment law is constantly changing, 2017 was a particularly big year. The Oregon Legislature enacted several significant new laws with broad impact. The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) appears to be moving in a new more employer-friendly direction. Immigration issues remain at the forefront, with recent widespread ICE raids.

The Oregon Equal Pay Act of 2017 strengthens existing protections, creates new provisions to ensure an individual's past salary does not hold them back when applying for a new job, and encourages all employers to conduct a pay equity study. The law has created considerable new obligations and areas of liability for Oregon employers and it can take time for businesses to discover and correct pay inequities in a workforce.
