If you are like most employers, you have a strong anti-harassment policy in place with some form of diversity training, both of which are designed to reduce or eliminate claims of harassment and discrimination in your workplace.  Your harassment policy probably also has a complaint protocol which encourages employees to report concerns of harassment to HR, but what if an employee actually lodges a complaint of harassment?  What then?  The strength of an employer’s defence comes from its complaint protocol and the effectiveness of its internal investigations into the complaints it receives.  Being able to recognize a complaint that warrants investigation is critical, as is the ability to investigate complaints in a timely, effective and meaningful manner to manage your legal risk while honoring your promise to provide a harassment-free workplace. You don’t have to be Columbo, Inspector Cluso, or a private investigator to conduct an investigation, but there are certain things you need to know in order to conduct an investigation correctly. Join us as for this interactive and entertaining discussion as we learn how to address complaints of harassment and how to conduct effective internal investigations.
